Why do mature men call the new R134a refrigerant, Freon?

These idiots walk in my husband's shop and tell him they want their cars charged with Freon. He explains that Dupont called their R12 brand refrigerant Freon back in the day. Today, it's a different refrigerant and it's called R134a and it's not called Freon and R134a is used for vehicles built on or after 1993. They bring in newer vehicles and after he tells them Freon was R12 back in the day and it's not correct to call it Freon and he will charge it with correct R134a, they tell him they won't let him charge their newer cars unless it said Freon on the container. I am a woman and I know R134a is not Freon, so why do men that claim to be great mechanics insist R134a is called, Freon?|||If they insisted they were mechanics, they would not take their vehicles to your husbands car repair shop for a/c repairs now would they? Freon is banned and you can't get it. Tell them to take it to another shop and have them put Freon in it. See how mad the next guy gets!|||Who told them they were mature? Or, for that matter, great mechanics?

"It is against the law to put R12 in this car. You can do it yourself if you like, but don't ask me to replace your compressor after you turn it into a heap of slag."

After about the third "Freon" request, I think I'd have something like that put on a sign and hung behind the counter.|||That's funny because I was in Advance Auto parts and the parts guy gets tired of everyone calling it freon. When anyone walks in the door and ask for freon, he says, "They stopped selling freon about 15 years ago!" Only a true mechanic won't call 134a freon.|||Because they are men and they have to be right at everything just get a can of r134a and slap a sticker that says freon on it and call it a day|||freon was the brand name for r12 way back when. when it was dropped adn r134a came about, the name just stuck. it is just what they are used to. i am curious why you say mature men but ill move on.|||Your statement is half correct there is fluro hydro carbons in both so they both are refrigerants same as r22 and r24 or alcohol refrigerant in commercial units or ammonia they all cool so most mechanics or people only know it by freon they don't realize the change. Any Certified Mechanic can explain that r12 or freon could be installed in their system at a cost of $120.00 a pound but since he is licensed he can't do it without losing his license. and the person wold rather pay $6.95 a pound, not to mention the systems are different. If you want to stay in Business you just go along with them and say you will fix it. And put the price of everything on the work order. A mechanic is like a doctor and a doctor he listens to your problem and prescribes you medicine and you follow his directions. Most doctors don't go into detail on why they are giving you the advice just that is what you should do It's the same with Ibuprofen or aspirin they are not the same but people ask for them that way. They also don't tell you to not take sodium chloride if you have high blood pressure they tell you to cut back on your salt intake, both chemical names are one in the same just different names.

The name of the game is make money by working you don't get paid to reason with the people or explain it to them just like I am a man and never try to ask why women do what they do it does not pay to go there. When your licensed to do AC work you do whats needed to fix it and tell them if they want you to explain it yo will charge them a half hour shop fee to do so. It's only fair your time is worth something. You can't change people you ca only work with them and go along for the fun.
